From intake to follow-up check: this is how we guide you through this process

Positive pregnancy test

The test is clear, you are pregnant! A new adventure is about to begin. As soon as you know you are pregnant, you can register with us. You can do that by phone or with the registration form on our website. We will then contact you to schedule your first appointments and discuss further information.

First appointment

The first appointment at the practice is called the first booking. We discuss your health, medical history and any previous pregnancies and deliveries. The second appointment is, as we call it our 'counseling appointment'. We will inform you about the prenatal screening tests you can choose in your pregnancy, such as the NIPT test and the 13- and 20-week ultrasound.

Pregnancy checkup

After the second appointment, we schedule the next pregnancy checkup. We will measure your blood pressure, discuss your wellbeing, sometimes take blood samples and feel your belly to see if your baby is growing well. Later in the pregnancy we will also feel the position of the baby in your belly. The appointments are every four weeks in the beginning. The longer you are pregnant, the more often you'll visit us. When you are almost due we will see you every week.

Echoes

Echopraktijk Echotoon has two consulting rooms next to ours and therefore we work together. We believe that the quality of ultrasounds is best when they are made by specialists who do this very often. Therefore, we deliberately choose not to make the ultrasounds ourselves. Because we are located in the same hallway as Echotoon, you can come to one place - possibly combined - for your appointments with us and your ultrasounds.

Discuss birth plan

After 34 weeks we will discuss your birth plan with you. Maybe you already have clear ideas about where and how you want to give birth, maybe not at all. Using our own plan as an example we can help you to put your wishes and expectations on paper. This is of course not necessary, but we think it gives a lot of insight and confidence to prepare the birth together.

Childbirth

The time has come: your baby is about to be born! No two births are the same and that is why we are so happy to assist you during this unique day (or night). Whether you want to give birth at home, in the UMCG or in the Martini Hospital, in a bath or on a birthing stool... we are there for you.

Maternity Week

During the first week after your baby's birth, we'll visit you (or we'll call) a few times. We'll work together with the maternity nurse (kraamzorg) on your recovery, your baby's health, and the feedings. Were you not with us during pregnancy or delivery, but with the obstetrician? You can also register for our guidance during the postnatal period. When the maternity nurse has left we are still available for questions and concerns, for example about breastfeeding or physical complaints. You can come to us with these questions until about six weeks after the birth.

Post-check

When your baby is about six weeks old, you are welcome for the post natal follow-up checkup. That is your last visit with us and after that we discharge you from our care. It may be nice to discuss the birth (again) and to ask questions. If you want we can also give you some tips and advice, for instance about your pelvic floor, breastfeeding and contraception. And of course we love to admire your big grown baby.

An ambitious practice in a special place

The main location is situated in the Centrum voor Zwangeren (Pregnancy Centre) in the UMCG. We run our practice there and work together with various disciplines from the UMCG. Echopraktijk Echotoon makes the ultrasounds in the room next to us and the gynecologist and clinical obstetrician have their consultations three doors down.

This way, there are many opportunities for consultation, shared care (if, for example, you are also under care with the obstetrician) and smooth en inspirational cooperation.

Pregnant and looking for a professional midwife? We are here for you.
